The Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse is thrilled to announce our first-ever North County event, Summit For Danny North County Community Climb, on October 22, 2022, from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Orcutt Community Park.

Participants can choose from two trail options including Rice Ranch Valley View Loop and Orcutt Hill Water Tank Trail Loop. All hikes will begin at Scout Trail and dogs are welcome. Following the climb, hikers and their friends and families are invited to enjoy a barbecue and a program with emcee Judge Rogelio Flores.

Your fundraising supports individual scholarships for the Daniel Bryant Youth & Family Centers, a program of the Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse, that provides substance abuse treatment for teens and their families. To learn more, visit cadasb.org or call (805) 963-1433.

Please help us prepare by registering in advance, although registration is also available at the event. A minimum pledge of $50 is required for adults to participate — $25 for youth ages 8-18, kids 7 and under hike free. All proceeds from the event will go to the Santa Maria and Lompoc Daniel Bryant Youth and Family Centers.

Summit for Danny encourages climbers to form teams — from friends to businesses to families, all are welcome. A traveling trophy is awarded to the biggest team! If you've been invited to join a sponsored team, click here.

The Rice Ranch Valley View Loop is a 4.10 mile, out and back trail on the east side of the Rice Ranch Community Open Space. From Orcutt Community Park, follow the trail head sign from the parking lot down past both of the dog parks. You will reach an access road called Sage Crest Drive where you will turn right until you see the trailhead on your left. The trail follows the southern edge of a low grassy hill dotted with pygmy oaks and sparse chaparral and then crosses the creek that runs through the park. You will then begin to climb Orcutt Hill leading through a grove of eucalyptus trees. The trail will lead through a mix of coyote brush and black sage before you reach the top of the hill. From the top, you can look east out over the park, the Santa Maria Valley and the Sierra Madre Mountains as they make their way towards the Pacific Ocean.

You will ascend, taking multiple switch backs until you reach the top of the Mesa. Upon reaching the top of the mesa, you will then start to descend. About halfway down, you will reach the water tanks. As you continue on the trail, look for the bench and head north into the treas. The final portion of the descent will be down a partially rocky ridge until you make it back to the trailhead.
